World Toilet Day - 19th November

World Toilet Day is a day to raise awareness about all people who do not have access to a toilet – despite the human right to water and sanitation. This is the logo of the global campaign.

World Toilet Day (WTD) is a campaign to motivate and mobilize millions around the world on issues of sanitation. Originally established by the World Toilet Organization in 2001, this day to draw attention to global sanitation issues is marked each year on November 19. Since 2001, World Toilet Day has grown in scope and recognition by global partners. In 2013, the United Nations (UN) passed a resolution recognizing WTD as an official UN international day
It was estimated in 2015 that 2.4 billion (about 1 out of 3 people) lack access to improved sanitation facilities, and just under 1 billion continue to defecate openly. Sanitation is a human right, just like the human right to water. Lack of access to sanitation, impacts on health, dignity, and safety.
The spread of many diseases (e.g. soil-transmitted helminthiasisdiarrheaschistosomiasis) and chronic malnutrition in children - which can be connected to a condition called Environmental enteropathy - is directly related to exposure to human feces.
It is estimated that 58% of all cases of diarrhea are caused from unsafe water and poor sanitation and hygiene (which includes poorhandwashing behaviors). This means that in 2013, more than 340,000 children under 5 died from water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) related diarrhea – i.e. nearly 1,000 child deaths a day. Providing sanitation alone has been estimated to lower the odds of children suffering diarrhoea by 7–17%, and under-five mortality by 5–20%.Ultimately, sanitation - the safe separation of feces from human contact and the environment, means that people are protected from these diseases. Providing access to basic toilets decreases disease twice as much as access to clean drinking water, however historically, toilet building receives a mere fraction as much funding.
Having to defecate in the open also infringes on human safety and dignity. This holds particularly true for women and girls in developing countries, who lose privacy and face shame having to defecate in public, or – after painfully holding their bladder and bowels all day – risk attack by waiting until night falls to relieve themselves.Women in developing countries are increasingly expressing feelings of fear of assault or rape when having to leave the house to use the toilet. Reports of attacks or harassment near or in toilet facilities, as well as near or in areas where women defecate openly, are not uncommon.  The consequences of such violence against women are both physical and psychological for the victim, and extend to families and communities that persist to live with gender based inequalities and lost economical potential of victims.  In South Africa researchers found that by increasing access to public toilets and by providing more of them, there was fewer incidents of sexual assault or gender-based violence carried out on women.
Since 2000, the world has been working towards improving access to safe toilets and ending open defecation through the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The sanitation target for 2015 has not been reached by 700 million people. Each year, WTD provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of sanitation, and stimulate momentum towards reaching everyone, everywhere with equitable and improved sanitation.

Organization at the global level

As part of the United Nations Resolution A/67/L.75, UN-Water and the Thematic Priority Area (TPA) on Drinking Water and Basic Sanitation, was tasked in 2013 with facilitating the annual implementation of WTD in collaboration with governments and relevant stakeholders.
Each year a theme for WTD is proposed by UN-Water. The UN-Water’s TPA on Drinking Water and Basic Sanitation facilitates the mobilization of civil society, think tanks, non-governmental organizations, academics, and corporates around the annual WTD theme to strengthen the global voice on sanitation.
UN-Water encourages and supports WTD campaigner’s to take action on issues of sanitation, and uses the WTD website, social media, and other means of communication to consolidate global WTD messages, resources, and activities. Whether individuals, organizations, or governments adopt the annual theme or not, conveners of this official UN international day work to connect and share global WTD efforts.

History

In 2001, the World Toilet Organization - which was founded by Jack Sim - declared its founding day, 19 November, as World Toilet Day.Since then, 19 November has been observed globally by its member organizations. Since 2007, awareness about World Toilet Day has also been supported by the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance via its working group on "public awareness raising".
In 2013, a joint initiative between the Government of Singapore and the World Toilet Organization led to Singapore’s first UN resolution, named “Sanitation for All”. This resolution addresses the global sanitation crisis and calls for collective action through commemoration of the World Toilet Day. It was adopted by 122 countries at the 67th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. The WTD became an official UN day

Annual focus theme

Each year of the World Toilet Day has a different focus:
  • The theme for 2015 is toilets and nutrition.
  • The theme for WTD 2014 was equality and dignity. The campaign strived to inspire action to end open defecation, and put spotlight on existing inequalities in access to sanitation and on risks of assault and violence against women and girls where sanitation access is poor.
  • The slogan in 2012 was “I give a shit, do you?”

World Laughter Day!!

Every Year in May , the first Sunday is celebrated as - WORLD LAUGHTER DAY around the world .

To my surprise and may be to many of you readers , this moment was started by , Dr. Madan Kataria , Founder of World wide Laughter Yoga moment , in Mumbai in 1998 .

But the question arises do we need a laughter day? Isin`t laughter should be a part of our every day life style .In our busy life styles we have some where forgot the art of relaxing and laughing .

There is too much competition around . Be it Kids whose parents are after them to excel and succeed and when they come to the teen age this pressure gets higher to score good marks in boards , get admission in a good college be it technical , medical or even normal.

And then continues the story as the kid grows up it leads to getting a good job earning more money from parents and if you have achieved a good job then off course you should have a good Girlfriend or Boyfriend which continues in search of an excellent life partner.

All this becomes too complicating and after some time this vicious cycle starts again .

In the corporate world there is a never ending competition . One has to balance between performance and office politics to survive and keep on earning that handsome amount and maintain the good job all through their life .

There's a lot of stress and in our day to day routines we forget to Laugh , Rest and Relax . it should be our choice to stop for a while and admire little things happening around us . It is our choice which button on the Key Board we want to click .

I am reminded , of an article written by Mr. Narayan Murthy , Chairman , Infosys , who in all his speeches to his employees makes a point to tell them to leave office on time . He believes the best work by an employee can be done only in his office hours .

He also emphasizes to the employees that beyond office , they should have a good social life and family life. This helps the employees  to be healthy and happy . He believes a Happy and healthy employee will perform much better in his normal office time than an employee who stays back and works late in the office.

To have a laugh , it does not means that one has to tell or listen to jokes all the time. one can just laugh on the smallest things happening around us. When we laugh there is a spiritual opening that connects us to the universe .

On this World Laughter day lets promise to our selves that every day will be Laughter day for each one of us !!

New Year !!, Fresh Hopes!! , Sincere work!! , High Achievement !!

And so the much awaited Financial year ends.all those long battles of Customer Acquisition,Target Achievement, Market Share, Competitors and their competitive strategies and talks of 2014 -15 financial year ends.

Some of the sales people may get a weeks more time from their respected companies to finish the leftovers from the financial year gone by .

Now is the time to look for fresh avenues both for the employers and the employees. A new year to look forward , promise one self to work harder and perform better.

For some it is the time to review and get new appraisals , new targets and new heights of achievements . For those whom this year was not so good ,can change their scenario in this new year.

It will also be that time of the year when new recruits and management trainees will be joining companies and organizations for the very first time in their life.

Isn't it should be the moral responsibility of the seniors in the company to welcome the new joiners. What happens is just paradoxical , new joiners are ignored and treated lightly by the seniors.

Just to think , what if every senior employee takes on to groom 1-2 new employees of their company . This small gesture will churn out more loyal and build a stronger team.

So, also comes the time for retreats and brain storming programs by the company. This involves some essential activities such as team building, leadership, motivation, stress management which will be required for the year long to achieve new targets for the company.

Once again motivation and keeping motivational level high in the team will play a key role towards successes.

Believe to WIN

I had wanted to connect with & u all lot before but in between lots of travel and year ending for formalities , I could not. Tomorrow is the special day for all of us in India as we take on & Australia in the ICC world Cup Cricket finals.

Cricket is said to be religion in India .I say in India cause it’s not only the 11 players of the cricket team but the whole country along with millions of Indians across the world will be playing the match at Sydney Cricket Ground, with the team.

And this also brings me to the continuation on of my last post year ending Targets and pressure. With almost only 6 days left to go, once again I say millions and millions of people in sales around the globe will be holding their grit and making their last minute efforts to achieve the target allotted.

At this point I would say it is not only all the hard work done up till now will work but also passion towards sales, mental strength and mentally brave people will survive and win.

Ideally after a yearlong spell of hard work these last 5-6 days should be the time to sit and reap the benefits of the hard work done in past. But ideally this does not happens. So then the question arises what should the sales people do-

  • Focus and make sure what they exactly want as no one can hit their target with closed eyes.
  • Do not stop…………….. If there is a will, there is still time left to reach the goal.
  • And remember, person who wins is the person who believes he can win!!

As we all are glued to our television sets for the big match between India & Australia and for the Indian Team it’s all the hard work done in past with a cool mind will work.

This week we also bid farewell to LEE KVAN YEW founding father of Singapore whose words will always be a part of history -

Even if you are going to lower me into the grave and I feel something going wrong. I will get up.

Don’t let anything go Wrong Team India !!

We wish the team to have a strong determination to win with pressure of mind on the field.

GOOD LUCK TEAM INDIA.

Last moth of the Last Financial Quarter , Pressure for Target Achievement

As we celebrate the Festival of colors HOLI in India,

Millions and millions of sales people around the world including India and fighting high to meet their year ending sales Target defined by their respective organizations .

Many may have gone through rigorous training programs , heard the story of Gazale , listen to the motivational leaders , played a number of motivational games and must be going through a daily briefing by seniors and daily reporting too.

The path to achieve the target may be difficult and there may be lots of hard work to be done in the background but once it is done there comes a sense of achievement and glory.

in my last post I had talked about patience and perseverance, but road to success is not easy and there is no shortcut hard work .

Why it becomes so important to achieve the target? Year ending also brings  in new hopes for promotions ,new assignments , bonus, appraisals, transfers and so comes new targets and the zest and zeal to achieve them .

Today as the match between India and West Indies progress we can see the hard work done in disguise by Indian Team which is now being seen on the field. The perpration done for past three months in Australia  is being met with the opportunity , now in the world cup is leading to much awaited and most worth wile success needed in the present scenario.

Meeting Targets is also something similar.Sales people are required to do proper planning and plan a lay out ahead and make proper prepration for the year ahead.

We,the Indians are vivid fan of cricket and every one of us has a cricketer in us.

Just like we never like India ,to loose any match , similarly any company never wants their employees to loose. So, for the sales team it becomes very important  to make hard work their habit. There should be a sense of self satisfaction in pushing our self out of the boundaries than we can imagine and we should have faith on ourselves that all this effort will pay off one day .

One of my senior Mr. SEH Razavi used to tell me that hard work is a continuous process and there is no time to relax . To a larger extent this remains true .

With this post , I would like to wish all those who are working hard tomeet their year ending target - GOOD LUCK!!

Perseverance & Persistence

On a Beautiful romantic Sunday Morning when Millions of Indian and Pakistanis around the world are Glued up to their television sets watching the most interested Cricket  Match between India and Pakistan in ICC World Cup cricket 2015 , there is a constant question - who will win?

The results of the match will be there in it due course of time , but I am reminded to a old story I had been hearing for a very long time now . Probably, not only in game , but this story holds its worth today in Corporate World and Education Arena equally .

While spending their holiday in South Africa , an elderly couple used to see a trainer took fleet of elephants in morning and returned in evening . This is nothing new scene when you are spending your holidays in South African Safari.

But to their astonishment what was more surprising that all these Elephants used to walk in a straight line , one behind another , in discipline . what was even more surprising that they were tied with with a simple rope which was even not visible from a distance .

Later in the night the Couple who, who both of them belonged to Corporate world and had been Powerful leaders in their own way , discussed why the elephants were not leaving the line or even running away . Elephants  are giant strong animals and they can easily run away any moment . But they did not .

So, the next day the couple decided to ask the Trainer who used to accompany the Elephants . They asked the trainer,"
How could this happen that not a single elephant makes an attempt to break free?"

The trainer explained: "When the elephants are very young, we use the same size rope to tie them, and at that time it is enough to hold them. Gradually they grow up, get stronger, nevertheless they never try to get away, as they believe that the rope will still hold them."

The couple was stunned. These strong animals could break free any time, but they did not, because they have been trained not to do so .

This is the Importance of training which is imbibed one being be it kids , youth or corporate .

Training teaches Perseverance and Persistence ............which leads to discipline and discipline leads to Victory .

Why Training is necessary ??

Training a word which did not existed a decade back has now become a common word not only in corporate but also in Academia . We now witness more and more organizations have started having some or the other training programs for almost all levels of employees . Couple of years back these training programs were organised for higher level managers or for achievers of the organizations .But today, the organizations are interested in organizing training programs for all levels of employees .

It may not be necessary for the organizations to hire , trainer from outside :- a senior manager can take the role but in the current scenario , in almost all the review meetings  having one such session , is very common .

The reasons mainly cited are to increase the productivity of the employees or to motivate them . But , in the core sense the organizations realize that  in this world of cut throat competition where playing - good or bad mind games is very common and with an  untiring need to succeed ; employees from top to bottom are stressed which in turn effects their performance .

Another reason , which can be cited is that in this fast moving young , well educated and talented youth have climbed the ladder on a fasted pace and have occupied top positions . at a younger age , where responsibilities are huge and to have a harmony is challenging .

These training session not only provide out of box thinking but also rejuvenate the employees with new energy !!
